Ageing in Place

This mature couple built their home in the 70's.  Although they intend to remain there for many more years, they wanted an update to improve resale value, and especially to better accommodate their needs and lifestyle now that their family has grown up and moved on.

They enjoy hosting holiday dinners for up to 30 people.   Some walls were removed , and  the existing fireplace & threshold were changed, allowing more room to set up tables and enabling their dinner guests to socialize more freely.

The new island is a handy buffet for platters of food, and the breakfast bar provides casual dining space with extra seating.

She loves to bake, so the island is her new baking centre, providing more counterspace for rolling out dozens of cookies and pastries.  It also houses a second oven to speed up the baking process, plus easily-accessed storage for baking ingredients, mixing bowls, and other baking tools.

A raised-floor closet above the stairs was converted to a pantry with pullout trays, super susans, and spice racks, making everything accessible.  Banks of drawers store everything within reach and a double pull-out waste/recycle unit is conveniently located.  Tray dividers in the full-depth cabinet above the fridge accommodate all her baking sheets, platters and trays.

Both bathroom vanities were re-designed to provide ample easy-to-reach storage for all their needs.

The living room was given a central focal point with a large screen TV mounted above the new recessed fireplace, and the flanking cabinetry provides display space and storage for media components.
